Manually removing an infected file from your computer is a fairly simple process, but it’s important to note that it should not be your first step to take if you discover your computer has been infected with malware.
A virus will usually spread through your computer to as many locations as possible, reducing the chance of it being fully removed if it is discovered. The first thing to do if you think you have a virus on your PC or laptop is to take a look at our guide on how to remove it.

Remove a single infected file from your computer
The first step you will need to take is to start your PC up in Safe Mode.
Safe mode starts your computer up with only the most essential programs and drivers operating and will also stop your PC from connecting to a network.
Once you have done this you’ll need to change your settings to display hidden objects in Windows 10. You can do this by following the steps below:
- Search for ‘File Explorer Options’ through the Windows search feature at the bottom left of your screen
- Go to the View tab and select ‘Show hidden files and folders’
- Untick ‘Hide file extensions for known file types
- Untick ‘Hide protected operating system files’
- Hit Apply, and then Okay.
All of the files in Windows will now be visible and available for you to access. If you know the file location of the infected file, you can now either navigate your way there or search for it, then right-click on the file and select Delete.
