June 11, 2019 Shenmue 3 will eventually come to Steam.
Deep Silver has confirmed that while Shenmue 3 will not launch on Steam, the game will eventually make its way to Valve’s platform. Following backlash from fans over news that the crowdfunded game is now launching exclusively on the Epic Games store in PC, an updated FAQ clarified the situation.
The FAQ states simply that “Shemue 3 will be released on Steam in the future,” but offers no time frame for that release. Games like Metro Exodus and The Division 2 were among the first games to make the move to the platform, and were slated for 12 months of exclusivity. More recently however, Borderlands 3 developer Gearbox announced that its game will release elsewhere after just six months.
While Epic Games and Playstation 4 logos appeared on the images shared on Twitter following a new E3 trailer, the Steam logo was conspicuous by its absence. That lead to speculation surrounding the game’s launch, and those queries were quickly followed up by a new post on the game’s Kickstarter page. The latest update read that “the new trailer was unveiled and it was announced Shenmue III for PC will be an Epic Games store exclusive.”
The update also reads that “development has been moving forward using Unreal Engine and the support we have received from Epic has been excellent. But most importantly, in looking for the most enjoyable experience on PC, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.”
Despite backlash from fans, Deep Silver and Ys Net say that Shenmue 3 refunds will not be issued to fans upset by Epic exclusivity.

There’s little more on offer for now, but I do take some significant pleasure in the sick burn delivered to Ryo by his master in the opening moments of the video.
